Simon Lemaire Participated in Drama Mainstage "Measure for Measure"

2016 May 16

Lemaire participated in the spring 2016 production of William Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure." The play, directed by Associate Professor of Drama Stefan Novinski, ran April 6-16 in the Margaret Jonsson Theater. Lemaire took on the role of Duke Vincentio.

"Measure for Measure" was performed April 6-9 and 12-16 at 8 p.m. and April 10 at 2 p.m.

In this darkly comic problem play, the Duke of Vienna hands over power to his unscrupulous adviser, Angelo, who seeks to restore law and order to the morally decaying city. When an aspiring nun, Isabella, pleads for the life of her condemned brother, Angelo's response is surprisingly sexual, forcing Isabella to choose between her brother's life and her own salvation.

"Viewing the darkly comic world of 'Measure for Measure' through the lens of 1940's film noir reveals wonderful new layers to the play," said director Stefan Novinski. "Shakespeare's meditation on personal and political corruption and the unsettling world of Noir share many of the same tropes: a corrupt city, dark and strange characters, mysterious intrigue, and fem fetales in distress."
