University of Dallas Presents: 'Results: Works from the UD Iron Pour'
Texas Atomic Iron Commission Visits University's Irving Campus
Irving, TX (04/17/2018) — The University of Dallas is pleased to announce an exhibition of cast-iron works made by faculty and students, "Results: Works from the UD Iron Pour," which is available for viewing now through Sunday, April 22.
The exhibition is located on the university's Irving campus in the Thompson Loggia inside the Art History Building. A closing reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 5-7 p.m., held concurrently with Associate Professor of Ceramics Kelly O'Briant's solo show, "Interstices," located in the Upper Gallery.
Artists and spectators from across the state gathered to participate in the annual University of Dallas Iron Pour on Friday, March 2, witnessing 500 pounds of molten iron cast at 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. The event was led by the Texas Atomic Iron Commission (TAIC), a collaborative organization that unites artists, faculty and students from universities across Texas.
TAIC invited sculpture professors Kurt Dyrhaug of Lamar University and Luke Sides and art lab coordinator Alex Johnson, both of Collin College, as well as Associate Professor of Sculpture Phil Shore and O'Briant of the University of Dallas art faculty.
Unlike bronze or aluminum, cast iron is a rarer process which requires the cupola, a special appliance often made by the artists themselves. Students and faculty of the university's Art Department constructed the molds in the weeks preceding the Iron Pour. The pour was held on campus in an empty field near Madonna Hall, besides the basketball courts.

The Thompson Loggia is located in the Art History Building at the corner of Gorman Drive and Haggar Circle on the University of Dallas campus at 1845 E. Northgate Drive in Irving.
